Christoph Wetzel at the Ständehaus in Dresden with a design for the Brühl memorial plaque, 2020

The Freundeskreis Schlösserland Sachsen was able to win the painter and sculptor Christoph Wetzel for the artistic design of the commemorative plaque. Born in 1947, he first studied sculpture at Berlin-Weissensee Art Academy, and then fine art at Dresden University of Fine Arts.

He has been working as a freelance artist since 1977 and has made a name for himself primarily through portraits and the reconstruction of baroque ceiling paintings. His best-known work is the painting of the dome of the Dresden Frauenkirche. Wetzel now has his studio in his native city of Berlin, but continues to be closely associated with Dresden.
